IPL 2026 Rohit Sharma out: In the thick of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, Mumbai Indians (MI) have suffered a sizable setback, as the franchise’s star batter Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of at least the next two matches. MI skipper Hardik Pandya confirmed the development on Thursday, before the team was about to lock horns with Punjab Kings. Speaking at the toss ahead of the match at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Pandya said Rohit would not feature in the fixture, adding that it may take him ‘a couple of games’ to recover fully.

Hamstring injury forces Rohit out
Rohit sustained an injury to his hamstring during MI’s previous outing against Royal Challengers Bengaluru earlier this week. The match ended in a comprehensive defeat for MI, and saw Rohit walking off the field after posting 19 runs off 13 deliveries. Despite on-field medical intervention, the veteran opener was unable to continue and did not return to the pitch, a development that dented Mumbai’s chase.
IPL 2026 Rohit Sharma out: This player roped in as Rohit’s replacement
In Rohit’s absence, the franchise has roped in South African wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock, who is set to open alongside compatriot Ryan Rickelton. The change signals a tactical reshuffle for Mumbai, who are eyeing stability in their campaign after delivering inconsistent performances this IPL.
Rohit’s bat underwent scrutiny in last outing
Notably, Rohit’s previous appearance did not lack drama. Prior to his innings, his bat underwent scrutiny during a routine gauge test by match officials. While Rickelton cleared the test smoothly, Rohit’s bat required multiple attempts before being given the nod, leaving him visibly frustrated. The bigger concern, however, cropped out later, as his brief innings was cut short by injury, compounding Mumbai’s woes in the contest.

His injury has also raised questions about his fitness ahead of future international commitments. He has been working towards extending his career, aspiring to feature in the upcoming ODI World Cup. While no official timeline has been announced for his return beyond the immediate fixtures, recurring fitness concerns could pose a challenge as he eyes another major global-level tournament.
