IPL 2026: Harshit Rana ruled out of tournament due to knee surgery, leaves KKR scrambling for replacement

IPL 2026 KKR squad: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have received a major setback on Friday, 8 days before the commencement of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, as pacer Harshit Rana has been ruled out of the tournament. Rana had undergone a knee surgery recently, and is unlikely to regain fitness in time for the campaign, leading to his elimination from the championship. 

The young fast bowler’s absence comes as a major disruption for the franchise, owing to his growing influence in the squad over recent seasons.

Coach Nayar says it’s not easy to replace Rana

KKR’s head coach Abhishek Nayar acknowledged the magnitude of the loss, terming Rana an integral part of the team’s core. He said while briefing the media-persons, “Harshit has been a key member of this side for the past few seasons. He has developed into a fine cricketer, and it is certainly not easy to replace him.” Notably, the pacer played a pivotal role in KKR’s 2024 title-winning streak, clinching 19 wickets in total. He then continued with the wicket-claiming spree in IPL 2025, claiming 15 wickets. 

IPL 2026 KKR squad: Franchise exploring replacement options

KKR are racing against time and are actively assessing potential replacements. They have been considering bowlers such as Navdeep Saini, Akash Madhwal, Simarjeet Singh, Saneep Warrier and KM Asif. All these bowlers have undergone trials and are featuring in practice matches. Nayar added that the team is closely monitoring performances and is consulting its leadership group before taking a final call.

Decision expected before KKR’s departure to Mumbai

KKR are likely to announce a replacement for Rana within the next few days, purportedly before they depart for Mumbai. The team is also awaiting further communication from the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence regarding Rana’s medical status. As the season nears, KKR’s ability to fill the void left by Rana could play a decisive role in shaping their campaign.
