A teenage girl from Maharashtra ended her life after being raped by her boyfriend and several of his aides on the pretext of marriage, police said on Thursday. According to police, the victim also left behind a suicide note, in which she said she feared social stigma and mental anguish her father would have to endure if the news of her sexual assault spread. 

As per police, the victim was aged 17, and was a resident of the Amravati district. She was in a relationship with the key accused for the past 10 months.

How did the incident unfold?

The police learnt that after landing in a relationship, the duo developed sexual intimacy after the man promised to marry her. She further alleged she was raped by her boyfriend on numerous occasions. 

Driven by the trauma and the fear of disgrace which would envelop her family, she consumed poison to die by suicide. She wrote in the suicide note, “I cannot put any kind of stress on my father….” She was taken to the hospital, where she succumbed during treatment.

According to police sources, the girl has levelled allegations of rape against her boyfriend, as well as three other people; her boyfriend’s friend, and her two female friends, of abetment to rape. 

The police said all four accused have been booked under the Protection of Children From Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and a probe into the incident is underway. They added that appropriate legal action would be initiated on the basis of the findings of the probe.

Shocking sexual assault cases reported from Maharashtra this year

It is noteworthy that shocking incidents of sexual assaults have made it to the headlines so far this year. In March 2026, an astrologer named Ashok Kharat was arrested from Nashik on charges of outraging the modesty of his female disciples and furtively recording their obscene videos. 

Ayan Ahmed Tanveer, accused of raping more than 300 minor girls

Another such case surfaced from Amravati, where a youth identified as Ayan Ahmed Tanveer (19) and his accomplices were arrested for allegedly sexually exploiting minor girls belonging to another religion. Post-arrest, the police recovered a total of 350 obscene videos and photographs from the cell phone of the key accused.
