Abaan Ahmed, one of the sons of the slain gangster-cum-politician Atiq Ahmed, was killed in a road accident in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi district late Wednesday night while he was heading to the city from Prayagraj to meet his elder brother, Ali Ahmed. Ali is currently lodged in the Jhansi district jail, the police said.

Apart from Abaan, another occupant inside the ill-fated car, identified as Ahzam, also lost his life in the wreckage, while three other people sitting inside the car sustained grievous injuries and were admitted to the hospital. Police have launched a probe to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the crash.

Vehicle dashes into divider after losing control

According to police, the wreckage unfolded on the Jhansi-Kapur highway under the jurisdiction of the Poonch Police Station. Preliminary findings by the police suggest the car allegedly careened out of control and then dashed into a road divider.

The impact of the collision was so fierce that the front portion of the vehicle was completely mangled. Local police and emergency responders rushed to the scene upon receipt of the information and conducted rescue operations to extricate the occupants from the wreckage.

Police probe on

Apart from the deceased, three other people who sustained injuries have been identified as Mohammad Zaid, Umar and another occupant. All three were swiftly transported to a nearby hospital, where some are said to be critical.

The cops said the group was heading towards Jhansi District Jail to meet Ali Ahmed, Atiq’s other son. Ali, according to police, had been transferred from the Naini Central Jail in Prayagraj to the Jhansi jail on October 1, 2025, owing to security concerns and ongoing legal proceedings.

The police have registered a case and have begun a probe into the incident. Officials are investigating the case from all angles, including overspeeding, driver fatigue, mechanical failure and other factors which contributed to the crash.

The damaged vehicle has been seized by police for forensic and mechanical inspection.

Atiq’s kin linked to high-profile criminal cases

The Ahmed family has been infamous for several high-profile criminal cases and political developments in UP over the years.

Atiq Ahmed, a former Member of Parliament (MP) and a five-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), was shot dead along with his brother, Ashraf Ahmed, in Prayagraj in April 2023 while both were being escorted by the cops.

The family further faced legal troubles following the murder of Umesh Pal, a key witness in the 2005 Raju Pal murder case. Atiq’s son Asad, who was wanted in connection with Pal’s murder case, was killed in an encounter by the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) in Jhansi in April 2023.
