A fresh political controversy has erupted in West Bengal after Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) founder Humayun Kabir made remarks about Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, saying he would pray for the BJP leader to leave the world soon. Kabir made the comments while speaking to reporters in Murshidabad.
‘May Allah Book His Ticket’
Kabir said he would pray to the Almighty for Adhikari’s “early departure” and used the phrase “May Allah book his ticket.” He also referred to political figures including former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, as well as other leaders who died in accidents or attacks.
Kabir said he wanted Adhikari to stop being Chief Minister and become a former Chief Minister. He also accused the government of harassment of minorities, allegations that remain contested political claims.
BJP Condemns the Remarks
The comments drew a strong response from the BJP. West Bengal Health Minister Shardwat Mukhopadhyay said political differences could not justify wishing death upon a political opponent and publicly condemned Kabir’s remarks.
Kabir Later Clarifies His Statement
Kabir later sought to explain his remarks. According to India Today, he said his comments were connected to his allegations of police harassment and subsequently said he wished Adhikari a long life and wanted him to complete his term and eventually become Prime Minister.
FIR Reportedly Filed
An FIR was also reported to have been registered against Kabir at Berhampore police station following the remarks. The controversy comes ahead of the October 6 Rejinagar bypoll, adding another flashpoint to the political campaign in Murshidabad.
