Ukraine launched its biggest drone offensive on Moscow in two years on Thursday, according to Russian state-run news agency TASS, in an overnight attack that damaged infrastructure, sparked fires and sent debris raining down across parts of the Russian capital region.
Russian air defence systems were activated to repel the assault, with authorities saying multiple drones were intercepted over Moscow and nearby areas.
However, fragments from destroyed drones fell to the ground, causing damage and prompting emergency crews to rush to several locations. There were no immediate reports of major casualties.
The large-scale strike marked one of the most significant attacks on Moscow since Ukraine stepped up its long-range drone campaign, highlighting Kyiv’s ability to target locations deep inside Russian territory.
Infrastructure Hit, Fires Reported
According to TASS, the attack damaged infrastructure and triggered fires in several areas, although officials did not immediately disclose the number of drones involved or identify the facilities affected.
Residents reported hearing explosions overnight as Russian air defences engaged incoming targets. Videos circulating on social media showed plumes of smoke rising from different parts of the region while emergency personnel worked to secure affected sites.
Authorities cordoned off areas where drone debris had fallen and launched investigations into the incidents.
Conflict Expands Beyond Front Lines
The latest assault comes amid escalating hostilities between Russia and Ukraine, with both sides intensifying strikes on strategic and military targets.
Ukrainian forces have increasingly relied on drones to hit sites far from the battlefield, arguing that such attacks are aimed at disrupting Russian military logistics and weakening its war capabilities.
Russian officials condemned Thursday’s attack and accused Ukraine of targeting civilian areas. Ukrainian authorities had not immediately commented on the operation.
Military analysts say the growing scale and sophistication of drone warfare have transformed the conflict, allowing both sides to carry out strikes hundreds of kilometres from the front lines.
