Advanced GFRP technology being used in Indore–Ujjain six-lane project, clarify officials

Indore-Ujjain six lane: Authorities have dismissed misleading claims circulating on social media regarding the use of “plastic rebars” in the under-construction Indore–Ujjain six-lane highway, clarifying that the project employs advanced Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) technology instead.

The clarification comes after a viral video alleged that plastic materials were being used in RCC drainage construction along the highway. Officials and technical experts conducted an on-site inspection and confirmed that the material in question is not plastic, but high-performance GFRP bars—an increasingly adopted innovation in modern infrastructure projects.

GFRP Bars: Stronger, Durable and Corrosion-Resistant

According to experts, GFRP rebars offer several advantages over traditional steel reinforcement. They are corrosion-resistant, lightweight, and exhibit superior durability, particularly in environments prone to moisture or chemical exposure.

“GFRP bars are part of advanced engineering practices and meet all prescribed technical standards. They are, in many cases, more reliable than conventional steel rebars,” officials stated.

The use of GFRP is especially beneficial in structures such as bridges, flyovers, water tanks, sewage treatment plants, and projects in coastal or saline conditions.

Approved Under IRC Guidelines

Officials further emphasised that the use of GFRP bars is fully compliant with guidelines laid down by the Indian Roads Congress under IRC Code 137: 2022. The code recognises GFRP as a safe, certified, and recommended material for road construction projects.

With its non-corrosive properties and long lifespan, GFRP is gaining traction as a preferred alternative to steel in several infrastructure developments across India.

What is GFRP?

Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) is a composite material made from glass fibres embedded in polymer resin. Unlike steel, it does not conduct electricity or magnetic fields, making it suitable for specialised construction needs.

Its application spans across roads, metro projects, marine infrastructure, and civic utilities, where durability and resistance to environmental factors are critical.

Misinformation Sparks Concern

Authorities have urged the public to rely on verified information and avoid spreading unsubstantiated claims. They reiterated that the Indore–Ujjain six-lane project is being executed strictly in accordance with approved engineering standards, ensuring both safety and quality.
