IIT suicide: A first-year male undergraduate student enrolled at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi was found hanging from a ceiling fan inside an apartment on the campus on Thursday, the police reported on Friday. According to the police, the youth may have died by suicide, though no suicide note was recovered from the scene.
The police said they received a call on Thursday morning regarding the incident within the institute’s residential complex. The police rushed to the New Vindhyachal Apartment located within the IIT Delhi campus.

Student pronounced dead at hospital
The cops entered the room to find the student hanging from the ceiling fan. A noose was tied to his neck by means of a stole. The police team rushed him to the IIT Delhi hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival. The cops began probing the incident, and preliminary findings suggest that he was a first-year undergraduate student residing on the campus along with his mother.
Mom left for native place on March 10
As learnt by the police, the student’s mother had left for her native place on March 10, 2026, and had spoken to him last on March 11. The following morning, when the student failed to answer repeated calls from his mother, another resident of the apartment attempted to check on him. The resident, along with the security personnel, opened the door to find the student hanging inside. On receipt of the information, crime and forensic teams inspected the spot and collected relevant evidence for further probe.
No foul play suspected
As per police’s claims, no suicide note was recovered from the scene. Later, the student’s father reached the location to give his statement, in which he said he did not suspect any foul play. Following this, the police sent his body to the Safdarjung Hospital mortuary for autopsy, and later handed it over to his kin for last rites. Meanwhile, IIT Delhi’s security officer submitted a written complaint to the police, requesting them to register an FIR and probe the incident.

The Kishangarh police have registered an FIR and said they are delving into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
