IIT Delhi rankings: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi has retained its position as the country’s top institute in terms of Engineering and Technology, climbing to 36th place globally in the latest rankings. The institute has also marked a significant milestone by placing five core engineering disciplines within the world’s top 50 for the first time, a remarkable leap from 2025, when only one subject had featured in the elite bracket.
Electrical Engineering stands at 36, leads the surge

Leading the surge is Electrical Engineering at rank 36, followed by Mechanical Engineering at 44, Computer Science at 45, Chemical Engineering at 48, and Civil Engineering at 50. The improvement is a stark one, when compared to 2025, where Electrical Engineering ranked at 47, while other disciplines were ranked well outside the top 50.

Dean (Planning) at IIT Kanpur, Professor Somnath Baidya Roy said that the achievement is a recognition of the institute’s persistent efforts. He noted that rankings only capture part of the picture, and added that they underscore IIT Delhi’s expanding global reputation. Furthermore, he reiterated the institute’s commitment to delivering world-class yet affordable education, manufacturing graduates who go on to lead across industries.
Department heads shed light on drivers behind rankings
The heads of the respective departments highlighted key drivers, which steered the institute towards improved rankings. Electrical Engineering, as per authorities, has benefited from upgraded laboratories and new initiatives, including specialised postgraduate programmes in VLSI design. Meanwhile, the Mechanical Engineering department authorities attributed the elevation to the integration of AI-driven technologies and contributions to defence-backed research projects, backed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
Curriculum reforms and investments in advanced computing infrastructure drew growth in the institute’s Computer Science department, with the authorities opining that a strong cohort of young faculty and researchers also contributing to it.

The institute’s Chemical Engineering department has seen robust industry collaboration, raking in close to Rs 40 crore in funding, along with a sharp rise in patents and research publications. The Civil and Environmental Engineering department has embraced emerging technologies such as AI, robotics and drone-based systems, by laying focus on sustainable and disaster-resilient infrastructure.
Notably, the institute has also maintained its position among the world’s top 100 in Natural Sciences (91) and Social Sciences and Management (84), reinforcing its standing as a leading global hub for research and STEM education.
