The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday sought to put an end to speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma’s international future, with secretary Devajit Saikia dismissing suggestions that the former India captain could be dropped from the ODI squad or is considering retirement.

The clarification came after the BCCI held a review meeting at its headquarters in Mumbai on Thursday. The meeting was attended by India head coach Gautam Gambhir, Centre of Excellence (CoE) head VVS Laxman, Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill and T20I skipper Shreyas Iyer.

Interacting with the media after the meeting, Saikia was categorical when asked about speculation surrounding Rohit’s ODI future. “He is playing superbly in all matches. What more do you want? In the last match, he scored 130-140 runs. So why is there speculation? I do not want to give fodder to the speculators,” Saikia said.

Is Rohit Sharma set to retire?

Saikia’s comments come amid renewed speculation over whether Rohit could call time on his international career.

Rohit retired from Test cricket in May 2025, after which his future in the ODI format has increasingly come under scrutiny. Reports had suggested that the BCCI and selectors were considering moving beyond the veteran opener with an eye on the 2027 Cricket World Cup.

The uncertainty intensified after Rohit was removed as India’s ODI captain last year, despite having led the side to the 2025 Champions Trophy title in his final assignment as skipper.

Rohit’s stunning England century

Speculation over Rohit’s ODI future reached another peak during India’s tour of England in July.

Several reports in the Indian media claimed that selectors had informed Rohit that the third ODI at Lord’s would be his final appearance in the format and that he was no longer part of their plans. Rohit, however, responded in emphatic fashion on the field.

The veteran batter smashed a stunning 138 off just 110 balls in the final game, producing a commanding century at a time when questions over his future were at their loudest.

His performance has since added another layer to the debate over his place in India’s ODI plans.

West Indies series holds the key

India have not played an ODI series since the England tour, with their next assignment in the format scheduled against the West Indies from September 27.

The squad for the series is yet to be announced, meaning Rohit’s selection is likely to be one of the biggest talking points when the team is picked. For now, however, the BCCI’s message appears clear: there is no indication from the board that Rohit Sharma is on the verge of retirement or being discarded from India’s ODI plans.
