The dilapidated government school building at the Rampura Kanwarpura village in Rajasthan’s Jaipur, where a team from the pressure group Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) had been attacked last month during their ‘School Thik Karo’ campaign, was demolished on Wednesday. According to Rajasthan government officials, a new school building shall be laid at the site at an outlay of close to Rs 18 lakh.

The CJP has called the development a ‘victory’ for its campaign, whose objective is to highlight and address the sad state of government schools across the state and the country. 

Unsafe school replaced

Notably, the Government Primary School, located in the Bagru Assembly Constituency, had been deemed unsafe in September 2025 and was subsequently taken out of use. 18 students enrolled at the school have since been attending classes in two rooms and a tin shed arranged by villagers. Buffaloes are also tethered near the temporary facility, underlining the difficult conditions in which the students have been studying. 

CJP’s co-convener Ashutosh Ranka, who sustained injuries during the August 21 attack, claimed the school had effectively been operating from a buffalo shed. 

He wrote on ‘X,’ “During the inspection, stones were thrown at us, women were assaulted and car windows were broken. But when a good school is built for our children, it will all be worth it.” 

Rs 18L sanctioned for new school building

Two days after the attack on the CJP team, the Rajasthan government announced funds for a new school building. As per the order issued by the government, Rs 12 lakh was approved from the District Mineral Foundation Trust on August 13, while the remaining Rs 6 lakh was sanctioned from the MLA fund. 

Locals have welcomed the decision to demolish the dilapidated structure and construct a new education facility. A villager named Lalchand Sharma termed the move a ‘positive development,’ saying the school had to be replaced, owing to its unsafe condition. He said, “The recent incidents and chaos surrounding the school were unnecessary. Schools are temples of learning and should not be politicised.” 

He further added that the villagers were pleased with the government’s decision and would extend all possible cooperation during the school’s construction work. 

CJP’s visit turned violent

Notably, the CJP workers had paid a visit to the school on August 21 as part of the group’s ‘School Thik Karo’ campaign. However, their visit took a violent turn when they were attacked by a group of people present there. 

The Rajasthan government drew criticism in light of the incident, and a political row too erupted over the condition of the school.
