Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee was suspended from the Lok Sabha on Wednesday for the remainder of the Monsoon Session after being accused of using "unparliamentary language" against a woman member of the House.

The action was taken after the Lok Sabha passed a resolution condemning Banerjee's remarks, with presiding officer Krishna Prasad Tenneti stating that the comments had "hurt the dignity of the House".

The suspension resolution was adopted through a voice vote amid loud protests and sloganeering by Opposition members over the NEET paper leak controversy and other issues.

Following the passage of the motion, Tenneti directed Banerjee to leave the premises of the House. The Lok Sabha was subsequently adjourned for the day as Opposition members continued raising slogans.

Heated exchange ensues inside Lok Sabha chamber

The suspension came after a tense episode inside the Lok Sabha earlier in the day. Banerjee was reportedly involved in a heated argument with some former TMC colleagues who have now joined the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI).

The confrontation took place after the House was adjourned amid Opposition protests. The NCPI MPs involved in the exchange included Mitali Bagh, Shatabdi Roy and Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar.

Banerjee has continued to remain with the TMC under the leadership of party chief Mamata Banerjee, while the MPs who switched sides following the party's electoral setback in West Bengal are now seated separately in the Lok Sabha.

The exact reason behind the verbal clash was not immediately clear. However, several Opposition MPs reportedly intervened to calm the situation. When questioned by fellow lawmakers about the incident, Banerjee left the House.

NCPI MPs meet Lok Sabha speaker

Following the incident, Mitali Bagh, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and other NCPI lawmakers met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in his chamber, apparently to raise the matter.

The development added to the already charged atmosphere in Parliament, where proceedings have repeatedly been disrupted by Opposition protests over several issues, including the alleged NEET paper leak.

The suspension of Banerjee marks another flashpoint between the ruling side and Opposition benches, with parliamentary disruptions continuing during the ongoing Monsoon Session.

Political background behind TMC-NCPI rift

The dispute also comes against the backdrop of political developments within the TMC following its defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections. Twenty TMC MPs had reportedly rebelled against the party leadership and later joined the NCPI.

Since then, these lawmakers have occupied separate seating arrangements in the Lok Sabha, reflecting the political divide between the two groups.

The Monsoon Session of Parliament is scheduled to conclude on August 13, with several contentious issues still expected to dominate proceedings in the remaining days.
