The Tamil Nadu Directorate of Collegiate Education on Wednesday withdrew its order issued on August 17, 2026, which had directed the government departments and the authorities of all districts to ensure steps to deter students and youth enrolled at government arts and science colleges from participating in political stirs and agitations. 

The withdrawal notice was issued after the controversial directive, which specifically refers to the August 17 communication and states that it is ‘being withdrawn’ immediately. However, the directorate did not specify any reason behind the rollback of the order. 

The development surfaced days after the Directorate issued the original letter following a communication from the state government dated August 14, which sought coordination among various departments to prevent students and youth from participating in political protests.

The earlier communication had instructed the School Education Department, the Department of Higher Education, the Police Department as well as the District Administration to work in consonance on the issue. 

Officials were ordered to take ‘appropriate coordinated joint action’ to prevent students and youth belonging to government arts and science colleges from joining protests and agitations organised by political parties. 

Moreover, the authorities were also asked to provide the Directorate with details of the action taken. In the August 17 communication, the matter was marked ‘very urgent.’ The directive effectively called for coordinated intervention by multiple government departments to discourage students and youth from participating in political demonstrations. 

What did the earlier order mention?

The August 17 letter cited the Tamil Nadu government's August 14 communication and called for coordinated efforts involving education officials, police personnel and district administration authorities. 

The departments were asked to identify appropriate measures to prevent students and youth from government arts and science colleges from participating in protests led by political parties. 

Furthermore, officials had been directed to report the action taken to the Directorate without delay.  However, with the latest withdrawal notice coming to the fore, the August 17 directive seeking such coordinated action is no longer in effect. 

No reason provided for withdrawal

The Directorate’s latest communication has withdrawn the earlier order with immediate effect, but does not provide any explanation behind the decision. The withdrawal marks a swift reversal of the directive issued just two days earlier. While the original communication had demanded coordinated action involving several government departments, the Directorate has now cancelled it.
