In-laws’ mindset will never change: Female govt teacher dies by suicide, alleges dowry harassment by husband, his kin

Marital woes worsened to an unbearable extent for another married female, compelling her to die by suicide, this time from Uttarakhand’s Dehradun. A school teacher attached to a government institution in Dehradun recorded a video moments before ending her life on Wednesday. In the 90-second-long video, she is seen sobbing and described months of emotional distress driven by the alleged torture her husband and in-laws inflicted upon her.

In the aftermath of the incident, police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) pertaining to dowry harassment and sustained mental and physical abuse against the victim’s husband and in-laws.

Victim’s identity

According to police, the woman who took the drastic step was named Srishti Kandhari, a government school teacher. On Wednesday, she was found dead at her marital home in the Doiwala area, located 20 kilometres away from Dehradun. The last video which she recorded before giving in to the alleged dowry-related torture has been making rapid rounds on social media, as she apologises to her mother and details on her sufferings she endured since her marriage.

FIR’s details

As per the details of the FIR, Kandhari had married one Saurabh Raturi, a government employee, in November 2025. Her mother alleged that Raturi and his kin repeatedly subjected Kandhari to dowry harassment and routinely branded her as ‘Manhoos (unlucky/inauspicious)’ for all the tragic events which followed after the union.

Kandhari’s statements in final video

In her final video, Kandhari is seen struggling to compose herself as tears trickle down her cheeks. For more than half a minute, she remains unable to speak, and then apologises to her mother. She said through sobs, “Sorry mummy, I am leaving like this.”

Further in the clip, she narrates her ordeal, saying she had endured the situation at her marital home for six months but could no longer stand it. She also alleged that her in-laws relentlessly blamed her for every misfortune that occurred after the wedding and repeatedly called her ‘Manhoos (Cursed).’

The clip ends shortly after she says that the mindset of her in-laws would ‘never change.’

Police name 3 in FIR

After the cops received a complaint by the victim’s mother, police have registered an FIR against Raturi, his mother Parvina and his sister Charu. Police claim that the case has been registered under provisions linked to dowry death, and a probe is underway to ascertain the circumstances under which Kandhari ended her life.

Doiwala Circle Officer (CO) Vandana Verma said police and a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team inspected the scene on receipt of information about the incident. She added that Kandhari’s body has also been sent for autopsy as part of the probe.

The investigating police personnel said they are examining the allegations of dowry-related harassment, the contents of the final video recorded by Kandhari and other evidence furnished during the probe. However, no arrests have been made so far in the case and further legal action will unfold on the basis of the findings of the ongoing probe.

Since the Twisha Sharma death case, which emerged from Bhopal against the backdrop of dowry-related torture and harassment, the Dehradun incident has brought renewed attention to the issue of domestic abuse over dowry and post-marital woes of Indian women.
