Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi’s visit to Seychelles marked a significant milestone in bilateral relations, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries and Seychelles’ Independence Day celebrations.

During the visit, PM Modi joined President Patrick Herminie as the Guest of Honour, underscoring the close and longstanding relationship between India and the island nation.

The high level visit focused on expanding cooperation in key strategic sectors, including maritime security, defence, trade, technology and climate action.

Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening ties under India’s Mahasagar vision, which seeks to promote security and growth across the Indian Ocean region.

Strategic Importance of Seychelles Grows

The visit comes at a time when geopolitical competition in the Indian Ocean is intensifying. Seychelles, owing to its strategic location along important maritime routes, has gained increasing significance in regional security calculations.

India has been steadily deepening its engagement with island nations in the Indian Ocean, and Seychelles remains a crucial partner in this effort.

Analysts note that China’s expanding economic presence and growing influence in the region have further highlighted the importance of closer cooperation between India and Seychelles.

Officials from both countries stressed the need for maintaining a free, open and secure Indian Ocean and pledged to work together to address shared security challenges, including piracy, illegal fishing and maritime crime.

Agreements Signed Across Multiple Sectors

A major outcome of the visit was the signing of several agreements aimed at enhancing collaboration in emerging and traditional sectors. The two nations signed agreements related to digital payments through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), cyber security, artificial intelligence, space cooperation, healthcare and capacity building.

The agreements are expected to boost economic cooperation and facilitate knowledge sharing between institutions in both countries. They also reflect India’s broader strategy of supporting technological and developmental growth among its partners in the region.

Financial Support and Development Cooperation

India also announced a financial support package worth ₹1,250 crore to support development projects and strengthen infrastructure in Seychelles. The funding is expected to contribute to projects in connectivity, public services and human resource development.

The visit reaffirmed the strong partnership between India and Seychelles and highlighted both nations’ shared commitment to regional stability, sustainable development and closer people-to-people ties in the years ahead.
