Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Saturday stepped down from his post and sent his resignation to Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi. He announced the move on his ‘X’ handle on Saturday noon, just hours before the third round of talks was set to begin between the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and the Union Government.

Breakthrough for CJP ahead of crucial talks

For over a month, Delhi’s Jantar Mantar had served as the epicenter of a fierce anti-government agitation. Demonstrators made Pradhan’s immediate dismissal their non-negotiable priority. Discussions between the Centre and CJP representatives had repeatedly collapsed over this single demand, reaching a tense standstill by Friday evening.

By Saturday morning, CJP leaders escalated their stance, publicly warning that no further dialogue would take place unless the Education Minister was relieved of his duties. Pradhan’s abrupt departure has cleared the logjam, with the administration bowing to pressure and fulfilling the final key request in the protesters' manifesto.

A three-point compromise

The nationwide student movement, sparked by allegations surrounding the NEET paper leak, centered on three uncompromising demands:

• The immediate resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan

• A total immunity guarantee against legal prosecution for all participating student protesters

• Financial compensation for the families of students who tragically died by suicide in the wake of the exam controversy

While the Centre had previously conceded to the second and third demands during intense negotiations on Friday, it had stubbornly avoided taking a position on Pradhan’s political future. His ultimate resignation marks a complete victory for the coalition of student bodies.

Announcing his decision directly on social media platform X, Pradhan framed his departure around the moral duty owed to the nation's youth.

"I hold deep respect for the aspirations, sentiments, and rightful expectations of the youth of this country," Pradhan wrote. "Realising the dreams of India's young generation has been the moral resolve of our political and social life. I express my gratitude to Hon'ble Prime Minister for the opportunity given to me to serve the nation under his visionary leadership."

Wild celebrations ensue at Jantar Mantar

News of the announcement triggered jubilation across the capital. Jubilant crowds at Jantar Mantar erupted into wild celebrations, chanting slogans and waving flags as the Minister's statement circulated online. Welcoming the move, the CJP issued a succinct response via its official media channel: "Long Live Student Power."

What began as a localized demonstration had rapidly spiralled into a formidable national movement spanning dozens of major cities over recent days. With main Opposition parties throwing their full weight behind the students and cornering the government in Parliament, the administration faced mounting political exposure, forcing a decisive retreat to restore order.
