Lady Shri Ram College for Women (LSR) in Delhi has suspended physical classes and shifted Wednesday’s classes online following the alleged gang rape of a 17-year-old girl at Aastha Kunj Park and a subsequent police encounter near the college’s back gate.

Police Encounter Near College Gate

The police encounter took place around 50 metres from LSR’s back gate, according to reports. Police said one of the accused in the alleged gang-rape case opened fire at a police team and was injured in retaliatory firing. The incident heightened concerns among students and staff about safety around the campus.

Students Raise Safety Concerns

LSR Students’ Union president Anusha Garg said around 2,000–3,000 women students live in paying-guest accommodation and other housing in the vicinity of Aastha Kunj Park. Some students have reportedly returned home or are considering temporarily leaving Delhi because of safety concerns.

Classes Shifted Online

The college cancelled regular classes from Tuesday afternoon and decided to conduct Wednesday’s classes online. Principal Kanika K. Ahuja said the safety and well-being of students remained the college’s priority. The institution has also requested increased police patrolling around the campus and nearby lanes.

Students’ Union Seeks Stronger Security

The students’ union has called for stronger security measures around the college and nearby areas. Anusha Garg has said safety measures should include identifying vulnerable stretches around educational institutions and examining issues such as lighting, visibility, transport and police patrols.

Safety Concerns Grow After Park Incident

The developments have increased anxiety among students living and studying around the Aastha Kunj area. The college is coordinating with Delhi Police while counselling support has also been made available to students.

The alleged gang-rape case remains under investigation, while authorities continue examining the circumstances surrounding the incident and subsequent police encounter.
