The Delhi Police, in a striking development on Saturday, invoked the attempt-to-murder charge in one of the cases registered in connection with the violence that broke out during the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) ‘Chalo Sansad’ march on July 20, 2026, escalating the legal proceedings against the ones allegedly involved in clashes near Parliament. 

The development emerged as the probe into the large-scale unrest continues, and the police allege that protestors attacked security personnel, damaged public property and attempted to breach security barricades despite repeated warnings issued to them by the cops. 

For the unversed, the protest had been staged against alleged irregularities in the NEET UG 2026 exam and to demand the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Clashes ensue near Parliament after protestors denied permission

Thousands of demonstrators, most of whom were youngsters, had gathered in the central area of the national capital on the opening day of Parliament’s Monsoon session to participate in the agitation led by the CJP. 

However, after authorities denied permission for their march to the Parliament, protestors and security personnel were locked in a prolonged stand-off at several locations close to the Parliament premises. 

Police eventually resorted to tear gas shells and unleashed a baton charge to disperse the crowd after tensions went up a notch. As per official figures, at least 129 police personnel, including several senior rank officers, and close to 60 protestors sustained injuries during the clashes. 

FIR includes multiple serious offences under the BNS

An FIR accessed by a prominent media outlet was registered on the complaint of a police inspector posted at the Kartavya Path Police Station. The case was lodged under 13 sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with offences pertaining to attempt-to-murder, assault on a public servant, obstructing public servants from discharging their duties, unlawful assembly, rioting, damage to public property and acts endangering human life. 

The incident pertains to the violence reported near Rail Bhavan on Rafi Marg, located in close proximity to the Parliament complex. 

The complainant inspector mentioned in the complaint that he had been deployed from 5 am at C-Hexagon, Zone-11 (Pink Booth) as part of the security arrangements. On receipt of a wireless message, the police team rushed to the barricades near the Rail Bhavan roundabout, where thousands of protestors had congregated. 

10 FIRs related to clashes registered

According to Delhi Police, security personnel used a limited baton charge against demonstrators trying to breach the security barricades, and claimed the cops fired tear gas shells only to prevent any security breach near Parliament and other vital installations. 

So far, 10 FIRs have been registered in connection with the violence which erupted on July 20. Police said a probe into all the aforementioned incidents remains underway, and they are continuing to examine evidence, as well as identify those allegedly involved in the stirs.
