Court Orders Transfer of Sonam Wangchuk to Medanta, Protest Continues at Jantar Mantar

The Delhi High Court has directed that Sonam Wangchuk be shifted from Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta Hospital for further treatment. The court also ordered Medanta to constitute a panel of doctors to oversee his medical care. The directive came in response to a petition filed by his wife, Geetanjali Angmo.

Sonam Wangchuk has been on a hunger strike since June 28. On July 18, after his health deteriorated, Delhi Police shifted him from Jantar Mantar to Safdarjung Hospital. His wife later approached the High Court, requesting that he be transferred to a hospital of the family's choice.

Protest Continues at Jantar Mantar 

Meanwhile, the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar entered its 32nd day on Tuesday. By noon, thousands of protesters had gathered at the site. Earlier in the morning, Congress Seva Dal volunteers distributed breakfast to demonstrators.

When police personnel arrived to manage security arrangements, CJP supporters raised slogans against them. Although Delhi Police had cleared Jantar Mantar after the Parliament march the previous evening, protesters regrouped late at night and resumed their demonstration.

PM Says the Guilty Must Be Punished 

CJP founder Abhijeet said that the party had decided not to hold another Parliament march because, according to him, the government and police had used force against students.

"This government may not care about students, but we do," he said.

Sonam Wangchuk also announced that he would continue his hunger strike after witnessing the police action against protesters.

Addressing an NDA Parliamentary Party meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the paper leak issue should not be politicized and assured that those responsible would face strict punishment.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, however, demanded the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, along with the Prime Minister and the Home Minister, saying they should apologize to students and take responsibility for the incident. Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi also visited RML Hospital to meet the injured students.

What Political Leaders Said

Akhilesh Yadav criticized the police action, saying that students and youth were subjected to baton charges and tear gas, damaging the government's image. He added that doctors had confirmed several students sustained serious injuries and questioned whether this reflected the government's slogan of "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas."

Shashi Tharoor said that Delhi and the country are facing several serious issues. Referring to the previous day's events, he remarked that if Parliament is not the right forum to discuss such matters, then where else should they be discussed?

After meeting injured students, Arvind Kejriwal said he had received numerous messages on social media alleging that several students had been detained by police, sent to jail, and falsely implicated through fabricated FIRs.

Mallikarjun Kharge questioned why tear gas and baton charges were used against students, noting that many were hospitalized. He also urged the Central Government to inform Parliament about the discussions held between the protesters and BJP President J.P. Nadda.
