CSK, team’s head coach Stephen Fleming mutually part ways after 18 glorious years; franchise leaders pay tributes
The Chennai Super Kings (CSK), one of the famous franchises of the cricket tournament Indian Premier League (IPL), on Monday brought the curtain down on one of the most successful partnerships in the history of the league, as they announced that head coach Stephen Fleming and the franchise have mutually agreed to part ways after a stellar 18-year association.
The franchise made the announcement on Monday by means of an official statement, while emphasising that the decision was an amicable one and was reached after a series of ‘open and honest’ discussion between Fleming and the team management.
The development comes after CSK endured three consecutive disappointing IPL campaigns, failing to qualify for playoffs in the league’s 2024, 2025 and 2026 seasons. The prolonged dip in performances had fuelled widespread speculation over Fleming’s future as the team’s head coach, with questions arising over whether the franchise would opt for a change in leadership.
A partnership that defined excellence in IPL
Fleming first joined CSK as a player during the inaugural IPL season in 2008, and later took charge as the franchise’s head coach in 2009. Over the next 17 years, he transformed CSK into one of the most admitted and consistent teams in franchise cricket.
Under his guidance, the Yellow Jersey men lifted five IPL titles and won two Champions League Twenty20 trophies. The franchise also qualified for the IPL playoffs a record 12 times and reached an impressive 10 IPL finals, cementing its reputation as one of the tournament’s most dominant sides.
Fleming was renowned for his calm leadership, tactical acumen and ability to foster a winning culture, which became synonymous with the CSK brand, helping it remain competitive across multiple generations of players.

Franchise leaderships pays tributes
Paying tribute to the outgoing coach, CSK owner Rupa Gurunath termed him the ‘heartbeat’ of the team’s coaching setup. She opined that his influence extended far beyond match results, adding that he had played a pivotal role in shaping the franchise’s identity, vision and relentless pursuit of excellence over nearly two decades.
The team’s Managing Director (MD) KS Viswanathan also chipped in, echoing similar sentiments. He lauded Fleming’s ability to build a culture founded on consistency, humility and teamwork. He credited the New Zealand’s former captain with bringing out the best in players while creating an environment where collective success where collective success always comes first.
Fleming bids an emotional farewell
Fleming reflected on his departure, describing his 18-year journey with CSK as the greatest privilege of his coaching career. He expressed gratitude to the franchise’s players and supporters, saying the unforgettable victories, challenging moments and lifelong memories would always remain dear to him. He added that although his tenure as a head coach has ended, he would continue extending support to CSK and cheer for the team in the years ahead.
