Chlorine Gas Leak Sparks Panic in Nagpur, 40+ People Affected

A stir broke out in Nagpur district of Maharashtra after a chlorine gas leak occurred in the Godhani area. A poisonous gas leak took place late Monday night at the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran’s water purification plant located in the Godhani Gram Panchayat area. More than 40 people have been affected due to exposure to the gas, with several experiencing breathing difficulties.

Information about the gas leak received around 12:45 AM

According to Mankapur Police, information about the chlorine gas leak from the plant was received around 12:45 AM on Monday night. As soon as the information was received, police, the Municipal Corporation’s fire brigade, and other rescue teams reached the spot. People living nearby were immediately moved to safe locations.

200-meter area declared a no-man’s-land

Considering the impact of the gas, an area of around 200 meters around the plant was declared a no-man’s-land. Barricading was put up in the area to restrict the movement of people. Local residents were advised to vacate their homes and move to a safe location.

NDRF and fire brigade took charge

To bring the situation under control, NDRF and Municipal Corporation fire brigade teams jointly carried out an operation. According to officials, the gas leak has been controlled by around 90 percent. Relief and rescue operations continued in the affected area.

Four people in ICU, 12 discharged

More than 40 people who came in contact with the gas were admitted to hospitals. Three to four of them are undergoing treatment in the ICU, although all are reported to be in stable condition. Meanwhile, 12 people were discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment.

One dog died

According to police, a dog also died in the incident. The administration is currently monitoring the situation. Police have appealed to people not to pay attention to rumours and to avoid panic.
