The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has summoned head coach Gautam Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and Centre of Excellence (COE) chief VVS Laxman for a review meeting in Mumbai on Thursday, September 3, sources reported on Wednesday.

The meeting is expected to focus on India’s disappointing recent run in the limited-overs format, including their series defeats against Ireland and England. The board will also assess the team’s preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup and discuss the recurring injury concerns affecting several players.

India’s recent struggles under scanner

India, led by Shreyas Iyer, suffered a shocking 2-0 series defeat against Ireland. The Men in Blue endured their first-ever defeat to Ireland in the opening game before their performance dipped further in the second match, resulting in a historic low for the side.

India’s struggles continued against England, who whitewashed them 4-0 in the five-match T20I series. The opening match was washed out because of rain.

The ODI campaign provided little respite. Shubman Gill-led India won the opening match of their three-game series but surrendered the advantage by losing the next two fixtures, eventually going down 2-1.

The BCCI is expected to examine the team’s performances, selection decisions and overall preparedness as it looks towards the next ODI World Cup cycle.

Focus to be laid on 2027 World Cup preparations

The board will also discuss India’s long-term preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup, scheduled to be hosted by South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe from October 4 to November 21.

With the tournament still more than a year away, the review is likely to focus on identifying the core group of players, managing workloads and building adequate depth across departments.

Injury crisis among players raises concern

Player fitness is another key issue expected to dominate the meeting. The BCCI announced India’s 15-member squad for the away series against Afghanistan on Tuesday, September 1. Four players in the squad are reportedly not fully fit and will have to prove their fitness.

Hardik Pandya’s fitness remains a particular concern for the board. The star all-rounder has not played an international match since the 2026 T20 World Cup final and has not featured in a 50-over international since the 2025 Champions Trophy final.

Pandya was ruled out of the ODI series against Afghanistan following IPL 2026 and subsequently missed India’s white-ball tour of the UK. He was also left out of the Asian Games squad and did not travel to Zimbabwe.

The all-rounder is currently recovering from an injury at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence. He is expected to return during India’s home series against the West Indies, beginning September 27.

The Mumbai meeting is therefore expected to serve as a crucial review of both India’s recent results and their readiness for the challenges ahead.
