A retired couple was found murdered inside their locked residence in Bhopal's Sudama Nagar under the Aishbagh police station limits after tenant students reported a strong foul smell coming from the house. Police have confirmed that the deaths were the result of murder, and a detailed investigation is now underway.

The deceased have been identified as 64 year old Hemant Barik, a retired railway employee, and his 62-year-old wife, Shakuntala Barik, a retired nurse from Kasturba Hospital.

According to police, the couple had not been seen for nearly two days. Concerned by the unusual silence and the foul odour coming from the house, students living as tenants in a portion of the property alerted the police on Friday. Officers reached the scene, broke open the locked door, and recovered the bodies from inside the residence.

Couple Lived Alone; Son Resides Abroad

Police said the Barik couple lived alone in the house, while their son resides abroad with his family. Authorities have informed him about the incident. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, and forensic experts have been called in to assist with the investigation. Police are also recording statements from the tenant students, neighbours, and other individuals familiar with the couple.
