The Madhya Pradesh government has intensified its campaign against the drug trade, with Chief Minister (CM) Dr Mohan Yadav declaring that the state’s objective is not merely to seize narcotics, but to dismantle the entire network operating behind their supply and distribution.

Speaking to the media in Indore, CM Dr Yadav said the government would step up action against drug traffickers, suppliers and individuals linked to organised syndicates. The move comes as Madhya Pradesh works towards Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi’s target of making the country free from all forms of addiction and drugs by 2029.

Focus shifts from arrests to entire network

CM Dr Yadav said Madhya Pradesh was working with full force to achieve the 2029 target, with the police and administration being directed to make the anti-drug campaign more effective.

The Chief Minister stressed that the drug trade was not confined to a particular district or state. Since such networks operate across multiple states, he said, tackling them requires coordinated action beyond geographical boundaries.

Accordingly, Madhya Pradesh is working in coordination with seven neighbouring states to dismantle drug syndicates. The strategy includes sharing intelligence, tracing suspects and establishing links between different components of the network.

The government’s focus, as per CM Dr Yadav, is not simply to arrest an individual accused of possessing or supplying drugs, but to establish where the narcotics originate, who is supplying them and which larger network is facilitating the trade.

Police tighten the noose around drug gangs

CM Dr Yadav claimed that the Madhya Pradesh Police had already taken action against several illegal drug gangs and syndicates. Those involved in the narcotics trade are being pursued continuously, with the government making it clear that the crackdown will not end with small-scale arrests.

The authorities are also preparing to target the wider network and the financial machinery supporting the drug trade, signalling a broader approach to tackling organised narcotics operations.

Anti-drug campaign compared with fight against Naxalism

CM Dr Yadav compared the government’s strategy against drugs with its action against Naxalism. He said that just as the government had mounted a determined campaign against Naxalite activities, similar resolve was now being demonstrated against the drug mafia.

The comparison underlines the government’s view that drug abuse is not merely a law-and-order issue, but a serious challenge to the safety of young people and future generations.

Youth remain a key concern

Protecting the younger generation is among the government’s biggest concerns in the fight against drugs. Young people are often seen as an easy target for those involved in the narcotics trade.

The government therefore intends to combine efforts to curb the supply of drugs with measures aimed at preventing young people from falling into addiction.

However, the biggest challenge remains dismantling a network that continually seeks new routes and methods of operation. The success of the campaign will ultimately depend on whether authorities can move beyond intercepting small consignments and reach the larger syndicates behind them.

For now, CM Dr Yadav’s remarks make the government’s position clear: Madhya Pradesh’s anti-drug campaign is set to go beyond arrests, with the entire network and its financial ecosystem firmly in the crosshairs.
