Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister (CM) Dr Mohan Yadav on Sunday called upon the youth to unite against substance abuse, warning that while traditional forms of addiction have declined over the years, newer and more dangerous forms of intoxication have emerged as a growing challenge for society.

CM Dr Yadav made the remarks while addressing a state-level programme organised at the auditorium of Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT), Bhopal, as part of the nationwide 'Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan' launched by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi. The 100-week campaign aims to create awareness among citizens, particularly young people, about the harmful impact of drug abuse and build a drug-free India.

The event was attended by Madhya Pradesh Sports Minister Vishwas Sarang and Bhopal Collector Priyank Mishra, among other dignitaries.

'Need to stand united against all forms of addiction': CM

Addressing students and young participants, CM Dr Yadav recalled that around 10 to 15 years ago, shops selling tobacco products, bidis and cigarettes were commonly seen at almost every street corner.

He said that although the presence of such shops and kiosks has reduced over time, new forms of addiction have increased in recent years. The Chief Minister stressed that society must now play an active role in combating every form of substance abuse.

"Everyone needs to come together and contribute towards eliminating addiction from society," CM Dr Yadav said, highlighting the need for collective awareness and responsibility, especially among the younger generation.

Liquor ban already enforced in 19 religious cities

The Chief Minister informed that soon after assuming office, the Madhya Pradesh government implemented a ban on liquor in 19 religious cities across the state. He added that strict action was being taken against drug traffickers and those involved in illegal narcotics activities.

CM Dr Yadav also mentioned that the Madhya Pradesh Police had recently conducted a one-month special campaign against drug abuse to curb the menace and spread awareness among people.

Citing an incident of two brothers attacking each other with knives during a dispute over alcohol consumption, the Chief Minister said addiction destroys families and damages social harmony. He urged youngsters to stay away from intoxicating substances and choose a positive and productive lifestyle.

PM Modi calls for a people's movement against drugs

Launching the nationwide campaign, PM Narendra Modi described drug abuse as a serious challenge to society and the country's future.

The Prime Minister said that the fight against addiction cannot remain limited to government initiatives alone and must transform into a people's movement with active participation from every citizen.

He emphasised that collective efforts have immense strength and expressed confidence that the pledge taken by millions of young Indians would continue for the next 100 weeks, creating greater awareness across the nation.

PM Modi stated that the vision of a developed India can only be achieved when the country's youth remain healthy, aware and completely free from the influence of drugs and other harmful substances.
