Maharashtra: Youth ends life, police probe reveals religious conversion pressure by GF, her kin; 1 held
A youth aged 19 allegedly died by suicide in Maharashtra’s Sangli district on June 25, 2026, and the police’s probe into the case revealed that he was being mounted pressure upon to convert his religion to marry his teenage girlfriend, the police said.
Notably, the case has taken a grim turn after the cops recovered digital evidence, including call records and chats, which are now being examined to ascertain whether the victim was subjected to sustained pressure before his death.
In a parallel development, Tamil Nadu police are probing the deaths of an inter-caste teenage couple whose bodies were found hanging amid alleged opposition from their families to their alliance.
Maharashtra youth’s mother levels serious allegations
The mother of the deceased Maharashtra youth, Bharti Shewale, alleged that her 19-year-old son had been under incessant pressure to undergo a religious conversion to marry his 15-year-old girlfriend, with whom he was reportedly in a relationship.
Acting on the complaint, the cops booked the minor girl and a co-accused identified as Sahil Raju Bagwan. The police have arrested Bagwan, while the role of the minor girl is being probed by police at present.
Digital evidence being scrutinised
Investigating officer in the case, Arun Sugavkar said that a video allegedly recorded by the victim before taking the extreme step does not explicitly mention the reason behind the same.
However, police have scrutinised his call detail records (CDR) and chat history, which established the fact that he was in regular contact with both the accused.
The cops have also recovered conversations relating to religion and religious conversions from the chats. All the aforementioned records are being analysed at length as the cops try to establish the sequence of events leading up to the suicide-induced death.
The investigating police personnel maintained that the probe is underway into the case, and is being pursued from multiple aspects before any conclusions are drawn.
Inter-caste couple found hanging in TN
In Tamil Nadu’s Mayiladuthurai district on Tuesday, a Dalit man aged 19 and his lover (17), who belonged to a Most Backward Class (MBC) community, were found hanging. The cops are suspecting the suicide to have resulted from persistent opposition from their families over their inter-caste relationship.

The duo had gone missing and were found hanging later. The girl was a Class 12 student, while the man worked as a daily wager. According to preliminary police reports, growing tensions between the families in recent weeks may have weighed heavily on the couple, which allegedly led them to take the drastic step. A police probe is ongoing to ascertain the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
