One dies, 100 injured as stampede like situation unfolds during Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri
A stampede-like situation transpired at the 2026 Jagannath Rath Yatra in Odisha’s Puri on Thursday, claiming the life of one person and rendering 100 others injured, casting a shadow over one of India’s largest and most revered religious festivals. According to officials, the incident unfolded on the iconic Bada Danda (Grand Road), where lakhs of devotees had congregated despite light rain to witness the ceremonial pulling of the majestic chariots ferrying Lord Jagananth, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra.
As per preliminary reports, a devotee experienced severe breathing difficulties amid the dense crowd. He was immediately rushed to the Puri District Headquarters Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. Meanwhile, according to officials, close to 100 people either sustained injuries or suffered health complications during the chaos, with 50 getting hospitalised for treatment.
Authorities probing cause behind chaos
Eyewitness visuals from the scene captured moments of panic as emergency personnel and fellow devotees rushed the injured to nearby hospitals. Slippers, bags and other personal belongings were also seen strewn across the Grand Road, reflecting on the bedlam-like situation.
Officials said they are persevering in efforts to determine the exact cause of the stampede-like situation. Odisha’s former CM expresses grief, voices demand for better crowd management
Odisha’s former Chief Minister (CM) Naveen Patnaik expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and wished a speedy recovery to the injured persons. He also pleaded with the state government to ramp up crowd management measures to ensure the safety, as well as the convenience of devotees turning up at the festival.
In a post uploaded on ‘X,’ Patnaik said he was deeply saddened by the news and prayed for eternal peace for the deceased. He further assured that the workers of the Biju Janata Dal would extend all possible assistance to the ones affected by the chaos.
Furthermore, he expressed hope that the state government would take appropriate steps to manage the massive crowds more effectively and prevent such incidents in the future.
Mishap revives memories of last year’s tragedy
The latest incident has also revived memories of a similar tragedy reported during the 2025 Rath Yatra. The stampede which ensued last year was triggered by a combination of crowd mismanagement, infrastructure shortcomings and logistical disruptions.
The 2025 incident claimed three lives and left more than 50 devotees injured.
