Torrent Group’s ₹43k-Cr MP Investment to Create 15,000 Jobs, Boost Energy Self-Reliance: CM Dr Yadav

Madhya Pradesh is set to receive a major boost to its energy infrastructure, with the Torrent Group investing more than ₹43,000 crore in a range of ongoing and upcoming projects across the state. The investments are expected to generate more than 15,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister (CM) Dr Mohan Yadav said on Wednesday.

CM Dr Yadav made the remarks after meeting Torrent Group and Torrent Power Chairman Samir Mehta in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. The discussions focused on the group’s ongoing investments, expansion of power generation capacity and the state’s long-term energy requirements.

The Chief Minister said the large-scale investments would help Madhya Pradesh meet its growing power demand and move towards greater self-reliance in the energy sector.

₹22,000-crore Anuppur thermal project

One of the group's key projects is a 1,600 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power plant being developed in Anuppur district at an estimated investment of around ₹22,000 crore.

The project is expected to create around 7,000 direct and indirect jobs. A Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) between Torrent Power and Madhya Pradesh Power Management Company Limited (MPPMCL) was signed on 27 January 2026.

Land acquisition for the project has been completed, while work has been awarded to major infrastructure companies, including L&T and Tata Projects. Following environmental and forest clearances from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, pre-construction activities are currently progressing rapidly at the site.

Pumped storage and wind projects gather pace

Torrent Group is also expanding its renewable energy and energy storage portfolio in Madhya Pradesh.

Work is underway on the 1,500 MW Patalkot Pumped Storage Project in Chhindwara, involving a proposed investment of ₹7,500 crore. The project is expected to generate around 4,000 employment opportunities.

Meanwhile, a 250 MW wind power project is being developed across Ratlam and Ujjain, with an investment of ₹2,000 crore and an estimated 500 jobs. The group already operates a 36 MW wind power unit in Mandsaur.

In addition, Torrent Group is working on another 800 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power project, involving an investment of ₹11,000 crore and provisions for around 3,500 jobs.

Torrent invited to bid for 2,800 MW capacity

With Madhya Pradesh’s electricity demand expected to rise significantly, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has assessed the state’s additional thermal power requirement at around 1,900 MW by 2036-37.

Against this backdrop, the state government is initiating a transparent and competitive DBFOO; Design, Build, Finance, Own and Operate tender process for procuring 2,800 MW of thermal power capacity.

CM Dr Yadav invited Torrent Power to participate in the major bidding process, aimed at ensuring reliable electricity availability for the state’s future needs.

Torrent’s pharma presence in Pithampur

Beyond the energy sector, Torrent Group also operates a USFDA-approved pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Pithampur, Dhar district.

The ₹300-crore facility currently employs more than 400 people, further strengthening the group’s industrial footprint in Madhya Pradesh.

Torrent Power, the Ahmedabad-based group’s flagship energy company, has an installed generation capacity of around 5.1 GW. The company is targeting approximately 10 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, with investments spanning solar, wind, hybrid, battery storage and pumped storage projects.

The group’s activities extend across energy, pharmaceuticals and city gas distribution, making its growing presence in Madhya Pradesh significant for both industrial expansion and employment generation.
