Assam’s Barpeta police on Monday laid hands on a man on charges of allegedly raping a minor girl (14), filming the act and sharing its video on social media, police reported. The incident, according to police, came to light when the accused began blackmailing the girl with the video, her kin told the police.

Sarthebhari police arrest accused

An investigating officer attached to the city’s Sarthebhari police station said that the duo had an affair and got intimate. During this, the accused allegedly filmed the intimate moments and according to her kin, he also shared the video on social media. Requesting anonymity, the cop added that they are examining the video, while the accused has been booked and arrested under Sections 4( Penetrative sexual assault) and 14 (using children for pornographic purposes) of the Protection of Children From Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. 

According to police, several other sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) have also been invoked against the accused. The anonymous cop further said, “This is a sensitive case and we are probing the details thoroughly. We cannot share many details now.” 

Accused a daily wage labourer

The police learnt that the accused is a daily wage labourer, who resides in the Palhaji area. He was acquainted with the survivor for more than a year and her kin were not aware of it. 

Her family members said. “She recently told us that a boy is blackmailing her by means of an intimate video featuring her. We have lodged an FIR and we plead with the cops to take down the video from social media platforms.” On the other hand, the police claimed they have recorded the statements of both the survivor and the accused, along with the former’s family members, and a detailed report shall be submitted to the court soon. 

Notably, the incident is the third of its kind in Assam over the past five days. On July 8, 2026, a girl aged 8, a resident of Assam’s Sribhumi district was allegedly raped and murdered, following which, protests ensued in the Madanmohan area of the city.

On July 10, a 48-year-old man, a native of Bihar, was arrested in the state’s Sivasagar district for allegedly raping a minor girl aged 12 on numerous occasions until she fell sick.
