Another man’s murder fuelled by his wife’s extra-marital affair has come to pass on Wednesday, this time from a village in Bihar, police said. According to police, they have arrested a married woman and her alleged lover on charges of hacking the former’s husband to death and dumping his naked body into a canal in a bid to conceal his identity.

Police added that the curtain was raised on the spine-chilling case after the victim’s body drifted into the Buxar district, setting off a probe which ultimately led to the arrest of the accused duo. 

Police said the victim, identified as Virendra Singh, lived with his family, which constituted his wife, son and two daughters. They learnt that he had got acquainted with one Arvind Kumar Singh, a resident of the same village, and struck off a close friendship with him, owing to which Arvind used to visit Virendra’s house frequently. 

Arvind, Virendra’s wife land in affair: Cops

During the probe, the police learnt that Arvind and Virendra’s wife, Mamta Devi, grew close to each other and developed an extra-marital relationship. As their relationship deepened, the duo began viewing Virendra as an obstacle to their relationship and decided to finish him off.

The murder, according to police, unfolded on the night of July 19, 2026. Investigating police personnel said Virendra was fast asleep when Mamta and Arvind allegedly attacked him with a sharp agricultural cutting tool, leading to his instant death. 

Body disposed of in canal to conceal crime

After the cold-blooded murder, the duo allegedly tried to destroy evidence by preventing the victim from being identified. Police said the accused duo stripped the body of all clothing and dumped it into a major canal, believing it would drift away and hoping that their crime may remain concealed. 

However, the conspiracy unravelled when the body floated from neighbouring Rohtas district into Buxar district and reached Kalmanpur village in Dumraon. The harrowing sight came to the notice of the villagers, who raised an alarm with the police.

Digital trail leads cops to accused

The cops rushed to the scene, recovered the body and mounted efforts to establish the identity of the victim. After the successful completion of the identification process, Virendra’s kin were called to the scene, who confirmed his identity. On the basis of a complaint lodged by the victim’s brother, Jitendra, police registered a case and launched a probe. 

The cops analysed digital records and location data to trace the ones suspected of involvement in the crime, during which, Mamta and Arvind fell into their dragnet. During interrogation, the police said the accused duo confessed to having been in a relationship, which triggered Virendra’s murder and the events which followed. 

Post-confession, the Buxar police produced the accused duo before a court, which remanded them to judicial custody. According to police, further probe into the incident is still underway.
