Indian cricket saw the dawn of a new era on Saturday as teenage prodigy Vaibhav Sooryawanshi (15) etched his name into the history books, emerging as the youngest-ever Indian male cricketer to represent the country in international cricket. The batter surpassed a 37-year-old milestone set earlier by the ‘God of Cricket,’ Sachin Tendulkar after receiving his maiden T20 International cap ahead of India’s second T20I. 

Cricketer Tilak Varma presented the cap to the teenage cricket sensation as India made a solitary change to the playing XI following the rain-hit opening match of the series. Sooryawanshi substitutes Sanju Samson, marking the beginning of what many are looking up to as a remarkable international career. 

Sooryawanshi steers to International cricket after stellar performance in IPL

The Bihar-born batter secured his berth in the national squad after a stellar performance in the 2026 instalment of the Indian Premier League (IPL), playing for Rajasthan Royals. He shone with the bat, making the coveted orange Cap fall into his kitty, besides also being named the campaign’s ‘Player of the Tournament.’

Although he remained on the sidelines during India’s matches in Ireland and missed out on the opening fixture of the ongoing series, the selectors handed him over his long-awaited milestone, recognising the extraordinary performance he exhibited throughout the IPL 2026 season. 

Cricketer names this record too after him

At just 15 years, Sooryawanshi has become the first Indian male cricketer to mark his international debut before turning 16. By doing so, he also eclipsed the record set by Sachin Tendulkar, who had stood as India’s youngest male international cricketer for close to four decades. 

Moreover, Sooryawanshi has also become the youngest Indian, across both men’s and women’s cricket, to represent the country at the international level. The record was previously held by Shafali Varma, who debuted for the Indian women’s cricket team in 2019 at an age of 15 years and 239 days against South Africa in Surat. 

Sooryawanshi’s accolades do not end here itself. He has further scripted history by becoming India’s youngest-ever men’s T20 International player. Washington Sundar topped the chart previously, who marked his T20I debut at 18 years and 80 days against Sri Lanka at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, back in 2017. 

Notably, across all formats among Test-playing nations, only Pakistan’s Hasan Raza made his international debut at a younger age. Raza represented Pakistan in a Test match against Zimbabwe in Faisalabad in 1996, when he was 14 years and 227 days old.
