Tech news 2026: Popular messaging platform WhatsApp is mulling an expansion in its ecosystem with several features reportedly under development for both Android and iOS devices. The Meta-owned app is currently testing updates through beta versions, which aim to step up privacy, customisation and safety of users.

As per recent reports, the platform is exploring a range of upgrades; from subscription based services and parental controls to enhanced profile features. These tools are said to be in the beta-testing phase, and are likely to be rolled out in future updates.

Expected features at a glance

  1. WhatsApp Plus subscription in the works: WhatsApp’s first notable addition could be a premium subscription plan, likely to be named WhatsApp plus. The paid version is expected to unleash advanced tools while retaining the core message service free for all its users. Features such as expanded cloud storage, the ability to link more than four more devices to a single account and enhanced business tools are expected under this. According to some reports, WhatsApp plus subscribers could also receive exclusive sticker packs and alternative app icon designs.
  2. SIM binding to beef up account security: WhatsApp is said to be developing a SIM binding feature, owing to which accounts could only work when the active SIM card associated with the registered number is inserted in it. If implemented, the desktop sessions and WhatsApp web facilities may expire within every six hours, prompting the users to scan a new QR code from their primary driver.
  3. Personalisation, privacy tools on the cards: The platform could roll out several user-experience improvements, including an app icon and theme customisation. Android users will benefit from this, and could modify the visual appearance of the app on their home screens, as well as within the interface.
  4. Close friends list for status updates: Analogous to Meta-owned Instagram, the messaging application could feature a close friends list for status updates, enabling the users to share their posts with a smaller and curated group rather than their entire contact list.
  5. Parental control tools: Reportedly, WhatsApp is also developing parental control tools that would restrict the interactions for secondary accounts, and will allow them to communicate only with saved contacts.
  6. iOS to get profile cover photo update: The messaging giant may also introduce a profile cover photo option for iOS users. This feature would appear above the user’s display picture and bio on his/her profile.
