Sanju Samson’s 97* steers India into T20 WC semis, record-breaking knock lights up Eden Gardens

T20 World Cup: Indian batter Sanju Samson displayed one of the finest innings of his career, in the crucial Super-8 match played against West Indies in Eden Gardens on Sunday. His unbeaten 97 off 50 deliveries steered India to a splendid 5-wicket victory over West Indies. Notably, this is the sixth time India has entered into the semifinals race in the T20 World Cup tournament.

India log 199/5 in 19.2 overs

The Indian Cricket team, in a bid to chase West Indies’ score of 195, smoothly outnumbered the score in 19.2 overs. The win sealed India’s place in the semifinals, and eliminated West Indies from the tournament. Samson, who was titled the ‘Player of the match’, said after the pulsating game that it was ‘one of the greatest days of his life.’ It is noteworthy that his 97* is the highest score by an Indian player in the history of T20 World Cup.

West Indies register competitive total

Earlier in the match, West Indies won the toss and chose to bat. Registering a score of 195/5 after being put into bat, openers Shai Hope (32) and Roston Chase (40) laid a steady platform, guiding the side to 45/0 in the powerplay. However, India fought back strongly through Varun Chakaravarthy and a decisive double strike from Jasprit Bumrah, who removed Shimron Hetmyer (27) and Chase in quick succession. 

India to take on England in semis

For the semifinal clash, India will now take on the England cricket team in Mumbai on Wednesday.
