International news 2026: A significant number of families in the United States are resorting to buying landline telephones at home amid the growing digital age, instead of smartphones. According to reports, the parents’ objective behind the step is to reduce the surging on-screen time of their kids, minimise exposure to social media, and slash online safety risks.

Parents choosing safety for kids over screens
A communications executive based in San Diego, Alison Lundberg told CNN that she decided to install a landline at her residence, as her daughter aged 4 would struggle to dial 911 from a cell phone in case of an emergency. Lundberg’s decision was prompted by a pre-school safety lesson, which compelled her to rethink how her daughter might seek immediate help.
Parents in the US have contended that landline telephones pave the way for the kids to communicate without getting distracted, and reducing the temptation of apps, internet browsing and gaming among them.

“Landlines building communication skills too”, say parents
Apart from safety, some families have chosen landlines, as they observed that their kids developed stronger conversation skills. A mother residing in New York said her kids are getting a hang of proper phone etiquette, such as answering politely, introducing themselves over phone calls, etc.
However, experts have warned that eradicating cell phones entirely is not a long-term solution. Clinical psychologist at Florida International University, Dr Shayl Griffith, issued advisory to parents to craft a clear and age-appropriate media plan according to their kids’ maturity.
