SIM Binding rule 2026: The Central government has confirmed that the ‘SIM Binding’ rule will come into effect across the nation from March 1, 2026, onwards. The move, as per officials, is aimed at curtailing surging cases of cyber fraud, and the rule mandates the functioning of WhatsApp, as well as Telegram, only when the registered SIM card is physically present in the phone.

According to experts, SIM Binding is a security feature that links an individual’s messaging application account directly to his/her SIM card. Hence, a person’s account on a messaging application will be operational only when the registered SIM card is inserted into the cell phone or other devices.

Notably, the measure has been adopted by the Central government to put an end to cyber menace, a large portion of which is facilitated through hacking of messaging application accounts and misuse of mobile phone numbers. The authorities believe that locking the messaging application accounts to the registered SIM card will prevent cyber fraud, as well as identity misuse.

As per the new regulations, applications such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Snapchat, ShareChat, JioChat, Arattai and Josh will require the SIM card to remain inserted in the device for access. If the SIM is removed, the aforementioned apps will automatically be disabled.

In addition to this, logins through other devices such as WhatsApp web will also undergo significant changes. If an individual is using his WhatsApp account on his laptop or desktop, the session will automatically log him/her out of the device within six hours.
