MP kid dies in borewell: A 3-year-old boy named Bhagirath lost his life on Saturday, days after he fell into an uncovered borewell in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain district, the police said. Chief Minister (CM) Dr Mohan Yadav expressed grief over the incident, and announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the bereaving family.
Kid had fallen on Thursday

According to officials, Bhagirath had fallen into the well on Thursday evening in Jhalaria village falling under Badnagar tehsil. He slipped into it while playing near the site. His mother, who was working nearby, saw him falling and raised an alarm immediately, after which the locals rushed to the scene and alerted authorities.

The authorities quickly launched a large-scale rescue operation, including the district administration personnel, the State Disaster Emergency Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force. Heavy machinery, including Poclain and JCB equipment was deployed to dig a parallel pit in a bid to reach the child.
Ujjain Collector Raushan Kumar Singh and Superintendent of Police (SP) Pradeep Sharma supervised the operation throughout, while additional rescue teams from Harda, Indore and Bhopal had also been mobilised to assist. Despite sustained efforts through the night and into Friday, the kid could not be saved. He was pulled out on Friday evening and was rushed to the hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
CM expresses grief on ‘X’

Taking to his official ‘X’ handle, CM Dr Yadav described the incident as ‘extremely tragic’ and extended his condolences to the grieving family. He said immediate rescue efforts were launched but they proved unsuccessful. Furthermore, he announced that the family of the kid would be provided a compensation of Rs 4 lakh.
Safety measures under question
Officials aware of the development said that the borewell has reportedly been covered, but the lid became dislodged, leading to the incident. The district administration has indicated that a probe will be carried out to ascertain accountability.
