Question on Allah in MP university: The Samrat Vikramaditya University in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain was embroiled in a major controversy on Wednesday after a question referencing ‘Allah’ appeared in a Foundation Course examination paper for third-year students enrolled in the BCom, BBA and BCA courses. Notably, the exam was conducted earlier this week, and has since snowballed into a major flashpoint, drawing protests, as well as political attention.

What was the question that kicked up a row?

The row, as per reports, centres on Question No. 45, which read, “There is no one other than Allah,” and asked students to identify the correct option from choices, which were listed as Someshwar, Khuda, Shaktivan and ‘The one who punishes.’ The issue came to light recently after a student flagged the question. Since then, the incident gained traction rapidly and sparked outrage among several sections of the society. 

Question on Allah in MP university: Right-wing groups protest

Following the reportage of the incident, several organisations, particularly the right-wing groups, objected strongly. They termed the question inappropriate and alleged ideological bias. Reports of protests emerged from multiple locations, with demands raised for strict action against the ones responsible for setting the paper. 

Meanwhile, some political voices claimed the inclusion was deliberate rather than an oversight, warning of a wider agitation if the issue is not fixed.

University Administration orders probe

In response to the incident, the University administration said it has ordered a probe and referred the case to its examination committee. Registrar Anil Kumar Sharma said that any controversial question is reviewed by subject experts to determine whether it aligns with the prescribed syllabus and academic standards.

He went on to say that if any irregularity is found, notices will be issued to the examiner concerned, followed by disciplinary action, if the need may be. 

Examination process under scrutiny

Moreover, sources said that the inquiry will also examine whether due procedures were followed during the setting and moderation of the question paper. The sources added that while the Foundation course syllabus does include references to multiple religions, the framing of the question in this manner is unusual. The university’s vice-chancellor has sought an explanation from the examination department, and an internal meeting has been convened to address the lapse. 

Notably, the incident has gained added significance, given that Ujjain is the home district of state Chief Minister (CM) Dr Mohan Yadav. With political undertones emerging, the controversy is now being closely monitored beyond academic circles.
