MP Wildlife news: India’s cheetah reintroduction programme gained another accolade on Friday, as a South African female cheetah, Gamini, lodged at Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park, gave birth to four cubs, instead of three, as reported earlier. Notably, under Project Cheetah, the population of the big cat at Kuno National Park has been growing rapidly.

CM Dr Yadav expresses joy
Gamini had delivered her cubs on February 18, 2026. Initially, she was seen with three cubs. However, the field and the veterinary teams carried out continuous monitoring, and learnt on Friday that she had delivered four cubs. All the four cubs have been reported to be safe and healthy.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister (CM) Dr Mohan Yadav expressed delight over the development. Taking to his ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) handle, he wrote that the achievement reflects the state’s commitment towards wildlife conservation and scientific management under Project Cheetah.

Gamini’s second time as a mother on Indian soil
It is noteworthy that this is the second time Gamini has given birth to cubs on Indian soil. Earlier, a Namibian female Cheetah named Asha had delivered five cubs at Kuno National Park.
Union Minister Scindia reacts too
Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia also described the instance as a matter of happiness and pride for the state. Meanwhile, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav too shared the update on ‘X’, lauding the efforts of the veterinary and the field teams deployed at Kuno.
