Anuppur building collapse: Death toll mounts to two, MP CM Dr Yadav announces ex-gratia

Anuppur building collapse: Almost a day after a three-storey hotel building collapsed in Kotma town of MP’s Anuppur district, claiming two lives, state Chief Minister (CM) Dr Mohan Yadav on Sunday expressed grief over the incident. He also announced compensation for the kin of the people who lost their lives in the incident, as well as to the injured.

CM announces decision on ‘X’

The Chief Minister took to ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) on Sunday and posted that the next kin of the deceased would receive Rs 4 lakh each from the CM’s discretionary fund, Rs 4 lakh under the Sambal Yojana and Rs 1 lakh from Red Cross. He further mentioned that the injured persons will receive Rs 2 lakh each from the discretionary fund and Rs 50,00 from Red Cross. He added that the state government has ensured complete support to the families affected by the incident. He also prayed for peace for the departed souls and speedy recovery of the injured persons.

Sudden collapse leaves many trapped under debris

As per initial reports, several people were inside the lodge when it came crashing down ‘like a pack of cards.’ The sudden collapse left residents with almost no time to react, resulting in many of them being trapped beneath the rubble. 

So far, authorities reported that two persons died in the incident, while at least seven people may still be buried under the debris. The authorities said that the rescue teams are racing against time.

Anuppur building collapse: Massive rescue operation launched

Emergency services, comprising police personnel, administrative officials and disaster response teams, have been pressed into service. As per reports, more than 100 personnel have been deployed to clear up the debris and locate survivors. Local residents are also aiding the rescue teams in the efforts. Reports of cries for help from beneath the rubble have emerged, which have intensified the urgency of the operation. 

Preliminary findings point towards construction activity

As per preliminary investigations, an ongoing excavation work was underway near the lodge, which may have weakened its foundation, ultimately leading to the collapse. The authorities said they are now examining whether negligence or unscientific construction practices played a role in the disaster.

Senior officials said they have ordered a probe into the incident, and have initiated inspections of nearby structures to prevent further potential mishaps. Meanwhile, it is being feared that the number of casualties may rise.
