Actor-politician Vijay booked: Tamil actor-turned-politician Vijay and members of his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) have been booked on Tuesday, on charges of alleged violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) during a high-profile election campaign held in Chennai on Monday.
According to police sources, the case was registered following Vijay’s nomination filing from the Perambur constituency on Monday, ahead of the assembly polls scheduled in Tamil Nadu on April 23. Thousands of Vijay’s supporters congregated during his roadshow on Monday, leading to impediment in traffic and alleged breaches of election norms.
Case booked under multiple sections of BNS
The police confirmed that they have booked a case against Vijay and other cadres of the TVK under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023 at the Peravallur police station. These include Section 126(2) for obstruction, Section 189(2) and other pertinent clauses. Officials alleged that the TVK workers assembled before the permitted time, causing inconvenience to the general public. They added that nearly 30 sound systems were used during the roadshow, which also counts as a violation. Authorities claimed it disrupted vehicular and public movement.
TVK accuses cops of inadequate support
In response to this, the party accused the police of failing to provide adequate protection, ensuring traffic management and other measures despite prior permission for the campaign. The party posted a statement on ‘X’, which mentioned that the absence of proper arrangements created an unsafe environment for their leader’s movement. Furthermore, the party demanded that the Election Commission of India (ECI) intervene, claiming one-sided action by the police.
Vijay to contest from two constituencies
Notably, Vijay is contesting the Tamil Nadu Assembly polls 2026 from two constituencies; Perambur and Trichy East. He will take on candidates from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), including incumbent MLAs. The Tamil film industry’s Thalapathy has also unveiled a series of poll promises, outlining his vision for a drug-free and self-reliant Tamil Nadu. Proposals kept forth by him include timely conduct of government exams, a financial assistance of Rs 4,000 per month for graduates and Rs 2,000 per month for diploma holders.
