Gwalior Cricketer in T20: A Gwalior-based cricketer, Anushka Sharma, has brought laurels to Madhya Pradesh by seizing a berth in the Indian Women’s T20 cricket team on Wednesday. Notably, this marks her first inclusion in the senior national squad, and she is slated to represent India on the upcoming tour of South Africa. Following the achievement, MP Chief Minister (CM) Dr Mohan Yadav met her at Gwalior airport and congratulated her.
Her father, Brijmohan Sharma, and other of her family members were also present during her interaction with the state’s top political leader.

Sharma picked up for 5-match series
Notably, Sharma has been selected for the five-match T20 series between Indian and South Africa. She is currently a part of the India A side, and has consistently impressed in both domestic cricket as well as the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

According to reports, Sharma is an all-rounder, and has showcased her abilities with both bat and ball, which drove her to the senior team. Her consistent performance across formats and tournaments caught the attention of the selectors, earning her a well-deserved opportunity at the highest-level.
Previously, she featured for Gujarat Giants in the WPL, where she exhibited spectacular performances. The franchise had secured her services for Rs 45 lakh, underlining her growing reputation in Indian Women’s cricket. It is also noteworthy that she is the first player from Gwalior to feature in the league, and has progressed to the national team now.

CM terms her selection a matter of pride
During Sharma’s interaction with CM Dr Yadav, the latter termed her selection a ‘matter of pride’ for the state and asserted that her success would inspire other young girls to pursue a career in sports.
Anushka had begun playing the sport informally with her brother at her home’s terrace before taking up professional training. She received a breakthrough in 2017, when she was selected for the Madhya Pradesh Under-16 team. In her debut tournament, she made an immediate impact by winning the Best All-Rounder award.
