Maa Kalaratri: Maa on the seventh day of Navratri, the end of time and the founder of the highest knowledge
Durga’s most fearsome yet most compassionate form, “Kalaratri,” is worshipped. She is also called “Shubhakari” because her fierce form is only for the wicked; for her devotees, she is always benevolent and boon-giving. Goddess Kalaratri is widely considered one of the many destructive forms of Maa Goddess Kali, Mahakali, Bhadrakali, Bhairavi, Mrityu-Rudrani, Chamunda, Chandi, and Durga. Raudri,
Dhumravarna Kalaratri are other lesser-
known names of the Mother. Saudhikaagama, an ancient Tantric text referenced in Shilpa Prakash, describes Goddess Kalaratri as the controller of night. Maa Kalaratri is the destroyer of evil. Demons, devils, monsters, ghosts, spirits, etc. flee in fear at the mere mention of
her. She also removes planetary obstacles. Her worshippers are free from fear of fire, water, animals, enemies, or night. By their grace he becomes completely free from fear
One should worship Maa Kaalratri with single-
minded devotion, enshrining her form in one’s heart. One should strictly adhere to the rules of Yama, Niyama, and Sanyam. One should maintain purity of mind, speech, and body. She is a benevolent goddess. The blessings that come from worshipping her are
incalculable. We should constantly remember, meditate, and worship her.
According to the Devi Mahatmya,
when demons like Shumbha, Nishumbha, and Raktabeej wreaked havoc in the three worlds, Goddess Parvati shed her outer skin and assumed the form of Kaalratri. Raktabeej had a boon that if a single drop of his blood fell on the ground, a new demon would be born
from it. During the battle, Goddess Kaalratri swallowed his blood before it could reach the ground and destroyed it completely.
Her body is pitch black, like dense darkness. Her hair is disheveled. She wears a garland around her neck that shines like lightning. She has three eyes, round like the universe. Radiant rays emanate from them, like lightning. Fierce flames of fire emanate from her nostrils with each breath. Her vehicle is a donkey.
She grants boons to everyone with the Varmudra of her raised right hand. Her lower right hand is in Abhayamudra. Her upper left hand holds an iron fork, and the lower left hand holds a dagger.
In the depths of spirituality, Maa Kaalratri holds the highest place. In yoga practice, today is the day of awakening the Sahasrara Chakra (located at the top of the brain). This chakra is the gateway to complete knowledge and salvation. Maa Kaalratri dispels the darkness of ignorance (Maya) and grants self-realization to the practitioner. In Tantra, she is considered “Mahayogini” and the “Goddess of Siddhis.” Worshiping her at midnight (Nishita Kaal) eliminates fear within the practitioner and bestows invincible power. She controls the planet Saturn, hence worshipping her also removes Shani Dosha.
