5 taken ill after Ammonia gas leaks during cylinder cutting in Indore’s Ravji Bazaar, officials rush to control situation

Indore gas leak: Panic gripped parts of MP’s financial capital Indore late Thursday night after a toxic gas, possibly Ammonia, leaked in the Ravji Bazar police station area. Five people fell ill after coming in contact with the gas fumes. Reportedly, the gas dispersed while a cylinder was being cut at a scrap dealer’s shop in the area.

Residents rush out of homes, face breathing trouble, vomiting

Residents of the area reported breathing difficulties and issues such as vomiting, after the gas fumes tore through the area. The passers-by covered their mouths and noses with handkerchiefs to avoid being affected by the gas fumes.

Administrative officials, cops rush to spot to control situation

On receipt of the information, several district administration officials and police personnel, including Additional Commissioner of Indore, Amit Singh and Collector Shivam Verma, rushed to the spot. They mounted emergency measures and called in water tankers to set the spraying operations into motion, to dilute and curb the spread of the gas.

Ill persons taken to the hospital, reported to be stable

Officials aware of the development said that 5 individuals, whose health deteriorated after being exposed to the gas, have been rushed to the hospital, and are currently under observation. The officials added that they are keeping a close tab on the situation.

Indore’s Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO), Dr Madhav Hasani said that all five persons, including two women, are currently stable and are out of danger.

Gas cylinder seized, scrap dealer detained

A fire brigade team rushed to the spot, and seized the cylinder from which the gas had been emanating. Meanwhile, the police said they have detained the scrap dealer, identified as Shehzad, for questioning.
