Cricket T20 International: New Zealand overpowered South Africa in the second T20 International on Tuesday by 68 runs, levelling the five-match series at 1-1. Devon Conway’s half-century and a fierce bowling display by the Kiwis helped the team capitalise on challenging pitch conditions to secure a victory. 

NZ post 175, find it hard to accelerate early

The Kiwis were put in to bat first, and posted a total of 175/6 on a surface that grew increasingly difficult as the match advanced. Conway led the innings, producing a 60. Tom Latham contributed 11 runs, while late cameos came into play from Josh Clarkson and Cole McConchie. Despite a steady start, New Zealand found it hard to accelerate early in the later half due to the pitch’s two-paced nature.

The South African team, in response to NZ’s score, faltered under disciplined bowling and crippled at 107 runs in 15.3 overs. All their ten wickets fell to catches in the second match. Pacers Ben Sears and Lockie Ferguson claimed three wickets each and dismantled the batting line-up. After a shaky start, South Africa lost their last six wickets for just 40 runs. Only George Linde delivered a quickfire 33 off 12 balls, smashing three fours and three sixes. 

SA skipper sheds light on defeat

South Africa’s skipper Keshav Maharaj admitted that his side misjudged the pitch conditions, particularly the expected impact of dew. He maintained that New Zealand’s disciplined bowling early on sent his team reeling. Post-victory, New Zealand opener Conway said, “It has been a very quiet couple of months for me, going over to India and not featuring at the World Cup.”

With the series moved to a draw, both sides will look to gain the upper hand in the third T20 International, slated to be held in Auckland on Friday.
